Interactive Google doodle marks Earth Day


New Delhi: Ticklish pandas, frolicking penguins, a growling lion, a cascading waterfall, waterfall climbing fish, a fish devouring bear, birds, butterflies, a koala and a jumping frog get together on an animated and interactive Google logo to celebrate the 41st Earth Day.
The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970 and was founded by US Senator Gaylord Nelson. The original Earth Day was attended by about 20 million Americans. The Earth Day movement went global in 1990 and is now celebrated in over 175 countries across the globe. April 22 was officially designated as the international Earth Day by the United Nations in 2009.
The day is marked to raise awareness and appreciation for our planet's environment.
Google is fast doing away with the static image doodles to celebrate events with more interactive ideas. For Charlie Chaplin's 122nd birthday the Google home page featured a YouTube video starring members of Google Doodle team enacting a Google-themed Chaplinesque scene.
The Google doodle had first gone interactive in May 2010 to celebrate the 30th birthday of the popular Pac-Man game. Then on October 8, 2010, Google celebrated John Lennon's birthday, a day in advance, with an innovative doodle that played a 32 second clip of Imagine, considered to be the singer-songwriter's most popular song.
For a dozen years, Google has been occasionally swapping its everyday logo for a doodle, a sketch celebrating holidays, inventions, artists and sporting events, and showcasing designs from contest-winning students.

Ustad Bismillah Khan’s 102nd Birthday

Today we celebrate the birthday of Ustad Bismillah Khan, shehnai maestro and one of India’s most beloved musicians. Born in Bhirung Raut Ki Gali, Bihar to a family of court musicians, it is said that his grandfather exclaimed “Bismillah!” upon seeing his grandson, and the name stuck. In subsequent years, as his mastery over the shenai grew, the public added the honorific, Ustad (master) to his name.
