Carson's achievements in marine biology and ecology have led to her work being credited with advancing the global environmental movement, a term which deals with addressing environmental issues. Her research in Silent Spring also led to a nationwide ban of pesticide DDT, a chemical which she thought to be environmentally negative. She died of a heart attack in 1964, aged 56 in Maryland.
