Google doodle celebrates Robert Bunsen's b'day

New Delhi: Continuing its tradition of of celebrating important events with a doodle, Google has an animated image of a laboratory on its home page. It is to observe the 200th birthday of German chemist Robert Bunsen.
Bunsen, along with his laboratory assistant Peter Desaga, developed the Bunsen burner, a commonly used laboratory equipment used for heating.
Robert Bunsen was born on March 31, 1811 in Gottingen, Germany. In 1830 he received a Phd in chemistry at the University of Göttingen. After teaching at a number of universities in Germany, he went on to be professor at Heidelberg in 1852, a post he held till his death on August 16, 1899. Bunsen never married.
Among the many inventions credited to his name are the carbon-zinc electric cell, the filter pump, the ice calorimetre and the vapour calorimetre.
For a dozen years, Google has been occasionally swapping its everyday logo for a "doodle," a sketch celebrating holidays, inventions, artists and sporting events, and showcasing designs from contest-winning students.

Farouque Shaikh’s 70th Birthday

Born on this day in 1948, actor Farouque Shaikh grew up in Mumbai, in a simple, middle-class household. Though he studied law at college, he continued to dabble in theater on the side, and eventually decided to give acting a go. Starting with  Garam Hawa  in 1973, Farouque Shaikh essayed agonizing heartbreak and light-hearted comedy with equal ease. If moviegoers fell in love with his shy smile in  Chashme Buddoor,  they marveled at his comedic timing in  Kissi Se Na Kehna,  and ached for his helplessness and loss in  Bazaar . Beyond the silver screen, Shaikh was integral to Indian theater, and his epistolary play, ‘Tumhari Amrita’  with Shabana Azmi delighted audiences for over two decades. TV audiences also loved him, be it for his humility in  Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai , or for his comic wit in  Chamatkar . Today’s Doodle by  Nimit Malavia  is a tribute to Farouque Shaikh’s cinematic career in a style evocative of h...
